Savory Star Bread

If you are still planning your Super Bowl snacks, add this one to your menu!  It’s quick, easy and showstopper beautiful!

This recipe is based on the King Arthur Flour Cinnamon Star Bread Recipe.  I love the cinnamon bread recipe for special occasions and holidays and it was super easy to convert to a savory version for an appetizer or side sure to impress.  I used the regular dough recipe, deleted the vanilla and reduced the sugar to 1 TBSP, that’s all I changed.  You can fill it with anything you have on hand or that strikes your fancy.  I had some ricotta cheese on hand, some pesto cubes frozen from summer pesto, and some fresh spinach from the Dane County Winter Farmer’s Market.  I mixed together the ricotta and pesto with some shredded parmesan romano cheese, and added in some Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes.  Then I thinly sliced the spinach so the layers of bread would lay as flat as possible.  Because of the shaping process you do not want the layers too bulky.

After mixing the dough and allowing it to rise you then split the dough into four rounds before rolling it out, topping and shaping.  You then allow it to rest about 45 minutes while the oven preheats before baking.  The baking process is only about 15 minutes, so once the proofing is finished the rest of the process goes very quickly.  Once baked you can serve the bread warm after allowing it to cool about 30 minutes, or you can keep it refrigerated or frozen for reheating later when needed.

This is a great project to make with children, and they will be amazed how beautiful it turns out!  Go ahead, give it a try for your Super Bowl party or any other gathering!  Your guests will be impressed at how talented you are, and how delicious this bread is! What will you use for your filling?  Sweet or savory?  Pepperoni pizza toppings?  Carmelized Onions and Bleu Cheese? Kalamata olives and crumbled feta? Taco fixins?  Let your imagination go with it!  And let me know how your experiment works out by leaving a comment on this post!  Buon Appetito!
